When the end of maternity leave approaches, many parents choose a childminder to look after their baby. But how to choose the right nanny? Discover our tips for finding that rare gem who will take care of your little one (almost) as well as you! 1. CHOOSE A MATERNAL ASSISTANT NEAR YOU It seems obvious, but in the stress of looking for a childminder, you can be tempted to ignore it. And yet, what comfort it is to drop your child off right next to your home before leaving for work in the morning! Another option: the nanny close to your workplace or that of the dad. But be careful, this implies that only one of the two parents is responsible for all the journeys… 2. OBSERVE THE PLACES Where will the children be looked after? Will they be able to explore the entire house at their leisure, or is there a room reserved for them? Are there enough toys available for all ages? Will other people (spouse or children of the nanny) be present at the same time as your child? Is the house secure? Keep your eyes peeled and ask questions! 3. FIND OUT ABOUT THE ACTIVITIES OFFERED Approved childminders all depend on a childminder relay (RAM) which generally offers activities for little ones several times a week. Does your nanny go there? Does she take the kids to the park or for a walk? 4. ASK HOW MANY CHILDREN WILL BE KEPT WITH YOURS Alone with his childminder, your child risks becoming bored after his first few months. But conversely, if too many children are present, the nanny may have difficulty granting the necessary availability to each one. It's up to you to judge the right balance for your baby! 5. CHOOSE A NURSERY ASSISTANT IN AGREEMENT WITH YOUR EDUCATIONAL PRINCIPLES Is your nanny uncompromising on discipline while you are rather relaxed? Are you careful to follow your child's natural rhythms, but the nanny wants everyone to eat and sleep at the same time? Don't kid yourself: it's going to get stuck! Although everyone can make an effort, you will not change the way your nanny lives and works. It is therefore essential to agree from the outset on the main principles. 6. TALK ABOUT MONEY Hourly rate, allowances for meals and maintenance, payment of public holidays, monthly payment… The conditions of the contract must be perfectly clear from the start. And be aware that from one nanny to another, prices can vary widely! 7. DON’T HESITATE TO ADDRESS SENSITIVE POINTS Is the nanny willing to look after your child when he or she is sick? Is she flexible on schedules? Can you afford to arrive late on busy evenings at work? Does she choose her vacation dates alone or are they negotiable to suit everyone? It is better to speak frankly about these issues from the start to avoid unpleasant surprises later. 8. MEET THE CANDIDATES WITH YOUR CHILD After a first interview between parents and childminders, do not hesitate to ask your favorite candidates for a second one so that your baby can meet them. And watch carefully: does the nanny immediately go to your little one? Does she know how to put him at ease? Is she affectionate? Does your child seem to like it? 9. GO FOR FEELING… Beyond all the concrete arguments in favor of a childminder, the main thing remains your intuition: you are going to entrust them with what is most precious to you, it is therefore essential that you feel comfortable and confident with her!
